TITLES & FORMS OF ADDRESS
The following section is an extension of the IOGKA Title/Menkyo regulations described in section 5.1. of the IOGKA Regulations.  It is imperative that IOGKA members understand the function of each of these categories; additionally, each member is required to adhere to these guidelines as representatives of the IOGKA within their respective Dojo, and within the IOGKA sanctioned and sponsored training events. This list does not address every title or form of address used in every dojo and organization; it is limited to only what is recognized both within the IOGKA based upon the regulations of the the Okinawa Goshukan Ryu Karate Do Kyokai (Honbu Dojo) in Okinawa, Japan.
DESCRIPTORS: A term that describes the position and hierarchy of a karate practitioner within the dojo and organization. Never used or substituted for an awarded title.
FORMS OF ADDRESS: Terms used between karate practitioners to address one another within the dojo and within the organization. Forms of address are commonly used terms, and are never awarded titles.
TITLES: Titles are earned and issued at organizational level, and are used to designate licensed instructors and executive level positions within the dojo and within the organization. These titles are commonly used in official documents, print and electronic communications, official letterhead, or when referenced by a third party, but never used directly as a form of address.

DESCRIPTORS
These terms simply describe the hierarchal position of each person within the Dojo.
KOHAI: A descriptor of someone who is Junior to yourself. NOT a form of address or title.
SENPAI: A descriptor of someone who is Senior to yourself. May be used as a form of address by juniors/kohai only. NOT a title.
DAI-SENPAI: A descriptor of the most senior ranking student in a dojo; NOT a form of address or title.
FORMS OF ADDRESS

These are the most commonly used forms of address within the Dojo, as well as IOGKA sponsored and sanctioned training events.

SENPAI: A descriptor of someone who is Senior to yourself. May be used as a form of address by juniors/kohai only. NOT a title.
SENSEI: A form of address for a licensed or non-licensed instructor above the rank of 3-dan; NOT a title.

CERTIFIED/LICENSED TITLES
The regulations and requirements for issuance of teaching titles can be found in Section 5.1 of this document. These IOGKA Titles may only be awarded at the organizational level.
SHIDOIN: A title, earned and awarded certification for Basic Instructor; NOT a form of address.
RENSHI: A title, earned and awarded teaching license; NOT a form of address.
SHIHAN: A title, earned and awarded teaching license; NOT a form of address.
KYOSHI: A title, earned and awarded teaching license; NOT a form of address.
HANSHI: A title, earned and awarded teaching license; NOT a form of address.
KAICHO: An Appointed Title for the Chairman/President of an organization. NOT a form of address.
HUKU-KAICHO: An Appointed Title for the Vice-President of an organization. NOT a form of address.
KANCHO: A Descriptor for the head of a Honbu Dojo of a Ryu/Style. NOT a form of address. NOT a title.
